13 Run Baseball Office Pool

I found an interesting format for a baseball office pool called 13 Run Pool. This pool does not take much strategy but can add some excitement to the long baseball season. If I were to create one from scratch, I would add a little Office Pool Guy flair to the rules to make it more strategic.

Here is how I would create a: 13 RUN OFFICE POOL

Objective: Is for your team’s total runs in a game to be between 0 and 13. Each total they reach equals one less number that you need to win the pool. The goal is to reach all 13 run totals first.

Group Size: 2-30

1) Each participant puts $20 into the pot.

2) Each participant picks one team to represent them.

Scoring:

  • The total runs of each team will be used.
  • Each number (total runs) that a team gets will be crossed off the chart.
  • All 13 numbers must be crossed off to win.

Optional Rules:

  • Instead of drafting teams, each participant must pick a team for the week (Monday-Sunday).
  • You can only use teams once (survivor format)

Tiebreaker:

  • Highest total runs by a team
  • Total times a team is shutout (0 runs)

3) Create a simple spreadsheet to track the pool like the following: Spreadsheet example

or you could use to track your 13 run pool:

13 run.com

officefootballpools.com

I am really interested in trying one out so I created a pool 13run.com. If you are interested in taking a team email me at dean@officepoolguy.com the team you want and we will start when we get 10 players.

PROS:

  • Simple to track
  • Easy to follow since you only have one team
  • Excitement every day

CONS:

  • Not much strategy
  • Difficult to win
  • Need to keep updated everyday

All Star Game Office Pool – Fantasy Draft Pool

I love All-Star game office pools as they add a little excitement to what many would consider a pointless game. Major League Baseball has tried to make the game mean something by having the World Series home field go to the winner but this does nothing for me,  therefore lets make this game exciting by having a fantasy draft pool for the 2010 All-Star game.

Here is how I would create an: ALL-STAR GAME FANTASY POOL

Objective: To draft a team of players that score the most points.

Group Size: 4-8

1) Print out a roster for the All-Star game

2) Each participant puts $20 in the pool.

3) Participants will draft a team of 5 position players and 3 pitcher (or until all the players are gone)

  • Each participant should have an equal number of players
  • It does not matter what position the players are.

4) Watch the game and apply the very simple scoring system.

Scoring:

Position Players

  • All Hits = 1 point
  • HR = 2 points
  • MVP = 3 points

Pitchers

  • Strike out = 1 point
  • Win = 3 points
  • Save = 3 points

5) Total each team’s points.

6) High point total wins the pot.

PROS:

  • Excitement every at bat
  • Simple scoring
  • Strategy involved

CONS:

  • Draft may take time to complete
  • Players don’t get many at bats

Home Run Derby Office Pool – Win All-Star Tickets

Today, I found a FREE office pool site that is offering up (2) tickets to the 2011 MLB All-Star Game to be played at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The contest is very similar to any bracket contest except in the first round you have to rank order the contestants based on their finish position. You get points based on how accurate your picks are for the three rounds.

Here is the site:

2010 Home Run Derby Challenge

Scoring:

  • First round correct choice: Five (5) points for each correct first round choice
Second round correct choice: Ten (10) points for each correct second round choice
Third round correct choice: Twenty (20) points for each correct third round choice

If you didn’t want to enter the contest you could use the same format and do it yourself.

Baseball Office Pool Idea – 50% Survivor Pool

As I reviewed a great office pool site called RunYourPool.com , I came across a baseball office pool that provides an interesting twist to the old NFL survivor office pool that is so popular come September. This weekly office pool has participants pick teams that will go at least 50 percent during the week. Just like in the NFL survivor pools, participants much choose different teams each week and participants get eliminated along the way. Sounds like a fun way to spend a summer.

Here is how I would create a: 50% BASEBALL SURVIVOR pool

Objective: To pick one MLB team each week that will win at least 50% of their games for week.

Group Size: Any

1) Each participant will pick one MLB team each week.

  • Participants can only pick each MLB team ONCE during the season

2) Participants must email their pick to the commish by Tuesday morning for picks to count (Weeks last Tuesday-Sunday).

Scoring:

  • If the team the participant picks wins at least 50% of their games that week, they survive and advance to the next week.
  • If the team does not win 50% of their games the participant gets a STRIKE.
  • 3 strikes and the participant is out of the pool

Payout:

  • Last participant standing wins the pot.

PROs:

  • Simple to create
  • Does not involve a big time commitment
  • Weekly like NFL pools
  • Must take into account multiple games

CONs:

  • Participants will be knocked out early
  • No true penalty for missing
  • Difficult to payout to multiple places
  • May end in a tie

How To Create A Homerun Derby Office Pool

Because of Major League Baseball’s long 162 game season, office pools for baseball fans tend to be grouped into two categories: Fantasy leagues and World Series squares.  These type of pools ignore those causal fans that want to have an office pool during the regular season that doesn’t require a huge time commitment like a fantasy league would. A Home Run Derby Office pool is perfect for this type of fan.

Here is how I would create a: HOME RUN DERBY pool

Objective: To draft a team of MLB players that hit the most home runs.

Group Size: Any

1) Get a list of the AL leaders in home runs and NL leaders in home runs.

2) Determine a draft order (serpentine draft works best)

3) Each participant will draft 9 players.

  • First 6 players drafted by each participant MUST come from different divisions.
  • The last 3 players drafted by each participant can come from any division

4) Scoring:

  • Solo home run = 1 point
  • 2 or 3 run home run = 3 points
  • Grand Slam = 5 points
  • Hat Trick (home run in 3 consecutive games) = 3 bonus points
  • Walk off home run = 3 bonus points
  • Optional simplified scoring: 1 point per home run

5) At the end of the month or end of the season, the participant with the most points wins.

PROs:

  • Very easy to create and track
  • Can be played for a season, half season or just a month
  • Creative and fun scoring system

CONs:

  • Must follow many different teams
  • Not a lot of strategy

If the Home Run Derby Pool is not your cup of tea then try a Weekend Baseball Survivor Pool.

Baseball Survivor Office Pool – What baseball fans do on the weekends.

You can’t win a Major League Baseball office pool without two key components: endurance and stamina. The season is so long that many participants lose interest well before the end of the season. This  is why most baseball office pools focus on just the playoffs and forget about the regular season. Not the Office Pool Guy.  I like to have something going during those long summer months, so I get a little creative.

First off,  we should look at the success of the NFL. It has become full of office pools and fantasy leagues in part because games are once a week, not everyday like in baseball. Therefore lets create a pool that does not require everyday participation and shortens the season.

Here is my suggestion:

A WEEKEND BASEBALL SURVIVOR POOL.

Group Size: Any

1) Pick a date to start the pool…say June 1st or after the All-Star game.

2) Determine what days constitute the weekend (I would use Friday-Sunday)

3) Find a schedule of MLB games.

4) Each participant will then choose one American League and one National League team each weekend that he/she feels will win by the largest margin.

5) Participants may not use a team more than once unless they have used all the teams in each league. (so once a player uses Seattle they can’t use them again until they have used all the other teams)

6) Scoring:

  • If the team WINS, the player will get the margin of victory
  • Example…if Seattle beats Baltimore 5-2, they would get 3 points.
  • If the team LOSES they get zero points.
  • If the player wins both games in the weekend they will receive a 3 point bonus.

7) Total points are then added up as the season goes along or until a set date (since there are 30 total teams, the season should last at least 14 weeks with 2 National League teams not chosen).

Optional Rules:

  • Have a lock of pick of the week which is worth double points and/or a lock of the season which is worth triple points.
  • Set up a schedule and play head to head games with other participants and keep win-loss records instead of total points

I will have a few more ideas on how to put together a baseball office pool in the next few weeks. If you have any other ideas of creative baseball pools, please post a comment below.
