NFL Office Pool Strategy Database To Add To Your Toolbox

When beginning an NFL office pool season, I put together a toolbox of helpful sites that may help me handicap the games. The Sunday Strategy website is one that you need to add to your toolbox. It could turn your season into a winner.

This site provides a large database of previous NFL games dating back to 2000. With it you you can sort NFL data by:

  • Standings
  • Trends
  • Statistics
  • Matchups

I suggest you use it as an addition to your usual handicapping not as a stand alone tool.

College Football Office Pool Idea – Conference Special

With the College football season is just around the corner it is time to discuss how to put together a College football office pool. The one main difference in a College pool and a NFL pool is the number of games that are played in a given week. In the NFL you will get between 12 and 16 games a week, while in college you could have 50 games in week. So that is why I try to limit the selections opportunities to just one conference.

Here is how I would put together a College Football Confidence Pool:

Objective: To pick the winners of College football games and earn the most points by your rankings of each game.

Group Size: Any

1) Pick a conference that you are familiar with or that you enjoy watching. (I choose the Pac-10 because it close to where I live)

2) Go to ESPN College Football Schedule and on the right side you will see a drop down menu that says “Conference Schedules”. Click the one that applies to the conference you want to use.

3) Copy the conference schedule you want and email or hand it out to your participants.

4) Each participant will pick the winner of each of the games and then rank them from 1-10 (the number of games that week) in how confident they are in their pick. confidence (10 being very confident and 1 not confident).

5) Participants must email you their picks before the first game on the conference schedule.

Scoring:

  • Participants get points for each correct game
  • Points are determined by the participant’s ranking of those games they got correct.
  • For example…if a participant has New England to win with a 10 confidence ranking they would get 10 points, if they miss the game they get zero points. (this assumes that their are only 10 games)
  • Add up all the points that the participant gets from his/her correct games.
  • In a week with 16 games  there will be 100 maximum points

Optional: Add in the spread so that each participant must pick the winner against the spread. This makes it much more difficult.

Optional: You can also throw out each teams non-conference games if you wish and only use conference match-ups.

6) Participant who scores the most points at the end of the season will be declared the winner.

7) Use the payout calculator to figure out how much each place gets.

NFL Playoff Survivor Pool – Keep everyone interested until the end

One of the most popular office pools is the Survivor or Eliminator pool where participants must pick one winner each week. Most have a rule that says that participants can not pick the same team twice and once you miss a game you are eliminated. The major issue with this pool is that it usually ends before the end of the regular, sometimes weeks before. It also knocks participants out early and therefore many lose interest.

So here is my suggestion: PLAYOFF SURVIVOR POOL

Still have your regular season Survivor pool but when the playoffs begin you will then start a playoff pool.

I got this idea from an NFL forum and really like it. You must plan differently in this pool because you might have to save teams to use down the road, possibly all the way thru to the Super Bowl.

Rules:

  • All entries will be required to make DOUBLE picks on the first 2 weeks of the PLAYOFFS, and then a single pick for Week 3 and then finally a single pick for the Super Bowl (Must pick 6 teams in total).
  • If your team(s) wins, you survive that week.
  • Survive until the end of the pool or until you are the only one left and you win or share the entire purse.
  • One catch – you can only pick each NFL team ONCE during the entire pool
  • Picks must be made before kickoff of the game involved but near the end of the pool, the deadline may be adjusted and may be as early as the first game of the week
  • An entry that survives a round but has no picks left is deemed to have survived further than an entry that does not survive that round
  • An entry whose pick loses in a round is deemed to have survived further than an entry that had no picks left at the beginning of that same round.

Payouts:

  • Regular Season Winner = 50%
  • Playoff Winner = 50%

NFL Survivor Office Pool With A Little Strategy – Margin of Victory

One of the most popular NFL office pool formats is the Survivor or Elimination pool in which participants pick one team a week until they lose a game and are eliminated. This pool is very popular because it does not take a lot time to do. The problem with survivor pools is that they don’t take as much strategy as other pick’em pools and may not last the whole season. That is why a Margin of Victory Survivor pool is one The Office Pool Guy’s favorites. A Margin of Victory Survivor pool not only adds a little strategy but also can last the whole year.

Here is how I would create an NFL MARGIN OF VICTORY POOL.

Objective: To pick one team every week that wins it’s game by the largest Margin Of Victory.

Group Size: Any

1) Each participant will pick one team each week that they feel will win its game.

  • Participants may NOT pick the same team more than once in the season.

2) Have participants email picks to the pool manager by Sunday at 9:00 pst.

3) Create a spreadsheet like the following to track the picks:

Margin of victory pool

4) Scoring:

  • If a participant’s team wins, they get the number of points equal to the margin of victory (ex…if you have Seattle and they beat Buffalo by a score of 30-10, then you get 20 points…30-10=20)
  • If a participant’s team loses they get zero points
  • Optional: you could subtract the margin of the loss from the participant’s total score

5) Tiebreaker

  • Fewest losses
  • Last loss
  • Biggest margin of victory in one win, 2 wins, etc…

6) Winner is the player who earns the most points (margin of victories) from their winning picks.

PROS:

  • Simple to create
  • Adds some more strategy to survivor pool
  • Nobody is out of the pool
  • Any number of people can play
  • Little time commitment

CONS:

  • Many people will have the same teams
  • May pick poorly and still win the pool

NFL Office Pool Idea – Confidence matters most

One of the best football office pools to participate in is a confidence pool. Though it is often associated with the college bowl season, it can be a extremely fun way to spend an NFL season. An NFL confidence pool is very difficult to master and takes the most skill of all the pool options, that is why I would not use the point spread in putting it together.

Here is how I would put together an: NFL CONFIDENCE OFFICE POOL

Objective: To pick the winners of NFL games and earn the most points by being confident.

Group Size: Any

1. Have each participant download week 1-17 of my NFL Confidence Sheets.

2. Each participant will pick the winner of each of the games and then rank them from 1-16 in how confident they are in their pick. confidence (16 being very confident and 1 not confident).

3. Each participant should then email their Confidence Sheet to you by Sunday 9 am PST.

Optional: Download my Confidence Pool Tracker (coming soon) to track the pool.

Scoring:

  • Participants get points for each correct game
  • Points are determined by the participant’s ranking of those games they got correct.
  • For example…if a participant has New England to win with a 16 confidence ranking they would get 16 points, if they miss the game they get zero points.
  • Add up all the points that the participant gets from his/her correct games.
  • In a week with 16 games  there will be 136 maximum points

4. Participant who scores the most points for all 17 weeks will be the winner.

5. Use the payout calculator to figure out how much each place gets.

PROS:

  • Rankings add tons of strategy
  • Very few ties because using a point total
  • Don’t have to worry about the spread

CONS:

  • Takes more time than other pools
  • Must use some sort of tracker to keep the totals
  • Can be more difficult to explain to others

If you don’t have time to create your own pool then you could let one of the following do it for you:
