British Open Office Pool – Golf Head to Head Pick’em Format

For a British Open office pool I am proposing a new format that I think will work great. The office pool format is based on the head to head match-ups and involves a pick’em style of play.

Here is how I would put on a: GOLF HEAD TO HEAD OFFICE POOL

Objective: To pick the winners of each head to head match-up

Group Size: Any

1) Print out a list of Head to Head match-ups from Bodog.com like the following:

2) For each Head to Head match-up, participants will pick who they think will be ahead between the two players at two points in the tournament…after rounds 1-2 and after 3-4

3) Tiebreaker Question – Each participant will  pick who they think will win the Open and actual winner’s final score.

Scoring:

After Rounds 1-2

  • 1 point per correct pick

After Rounds 3-4

  • 2 points per correct pick

Tiebreaker

  • Participant who picks the winner or who’s winner finishes highest
  • Closest to the total score of the winner

4) Winner is the participant who scores the most total points after the 4 rounds.

Payouts:

  • 60% to 1st place
  • 30%  to 2nd place
  • 10%  to 3rd place

How To Create A US Open Golf Office Pool

Creating a US Open golf office pool is one of the most rewarding pools we can create because the US Open is one of the world’s most difficult golf tournaments. Participants are never out of contention as the leaders struggle every year to tame the Open course. This year at Pebble Beach should prove no different, and we should have an interesting golf office pool.

A popular way to create a golf office pool is to do a draft like I proposed for the PGA Championship tournament last month. But here I am going to propose a different draft structure:

Here is how I would create a SALARY CAP GOLF POOL:

Description: To draft the best team of 4 golfers, staying under a salary cap.

Group Size: up to 10

1) Use a salary cap of $150 fictional dollars

2) Use the World Golf Ranking average points to determine the price of the golfers (move the decimal one place)…for example Tiger’s average is 10.13 so he would be worth 101 fictional dollars.

3) Determine a draft order and use a serpentine draft (1-10, 10-1, 1-10 etc)

4) Each participant will draft 5 golfers (only 4 will count toward total).

5) Scoring:

  • After the tournament add the MONEY won by each participants top 4 golfers.

6) Payout:

  • Team of 4 golfers with the most money won (75 %)
  • Participant who has the golfer who won the most money (25%)
  • Tie Breaker = 5th golfer total score

This is one of my favorite ways to create a golf office pool because it takes some strategy and it does not involve a spreadsheet. Just wait till the end of the tournament and add up the money won.

Golf Office Pool Idea To Tide Us Over

With the Kentucky Derby over and the NBA the middle of the playoffs, finding opportunities to put on an office pool will become more difficult until we get closer to the 2010 World Cup. Until then we need to find special events that can provide some excitement. That is where the Players Championship comes in. This tournament, played in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, has a purse of over 9 million dollars and is one of the bigger on the tour. With little work, you could put an office pool together that will last from Thursday to Sunday.

Here is how to put together an office pool for Players Championship:

Group Size: Any

1) Each participant drafts 6 golfers and an entry fee is determined.

2) 4  of the 6 golfers will used for each participant’s total score.

3) Scoring:

  • Total strokes under par for each participant’s golfers (not total strokes)
  • Ie…if I have Tiger, Els, Kim and Garcia on my team and they are 6 under, 3 under, 1 under and 2 over par respectively, then I would add then together to get 8 under par (10 under plus 2 over).
  • Must have 4 golfers make the cut to win the main pot

4) An easy excel spreadsheet can be created to track the scores.

5) Payout:

  • Main Pot = Best total under par for 4 golfers
  • Secondary Pot = Winner of the tournament

Optional Payouts

  • Most birdies
  • Lowest total after each round
  • Lowest golfer after each round

Try it out and let me know if you have any other ideas on golf office pools.
