Belmont Stakes 2011 Picks

The Belmont Stakes provides us a great betting opportunity because many of the horse have raced before and it is the longest of the Triple Crown, so we can eliminate many of the contenders. After successfully picking last years Belmont I am going to give it another try this year.

THIS YEAR WINNER WILL BE:

Master of Hounds 10-1

Here is why I like Master of Hounds:

#1 Post

  • Saving ground is very important in the longest race of the Triple Crown.
  • Master of Hounds will be able to sit back and wait for an opening since he is not going for the lead.

Gomez aboard

  • Master of Hounds has a very experienced rider.
  • Gomez is one of the best riders in America
  • Just like Drosselmeyer last year with Smith riding, Master of Hounds will benefit from Gomez’s experience

Getting Better

  • Each of his last two races have been improving.
  • His 95 Beyer in the Derby and 5th place finish show he is capable of competing here.
  • He has not raced much in America so expect more improvement

Connections

  • The genius connections are looking for a score America

If Master of Hounds does not win then who:

Brillant Speed 15-1 (another improving horse)

Trifecta:

Master of Hounds with Brillant Speed with Nehro (box it)

Good Luck,

The Office Pool Guy

5 Reasons Why Astrology Will Win The Preakness

The Preakness Stakes is a great betting race as you have many overvalued horses coming in from the Kentucky Derby going against fresh horse who few heard seen race. So with this in mind, I am going to give you five reasons why Astrology (who did not compete in the Derby) will come out on top Saturday. I used this same formula when I cashed a ticket last year on Drosselmeyer at 13-1 in the Belmont Stakes so fade at your own risk.

Reason #1 Pedigree

This horse was one of the Derby favorites as a two-year old (similar to Drosselmeyer) and was sired by AP Indy/Seattle Slew. Any time you can get a Seattle Slew horse you have to give it a close look. The owners paid a pretty penny for Astrology and he  looked like he was going to be great route horse. Astrology has been pointed towards the Preakness so expect his best effort.

Reason #2 Mike Smith

This is the second time that Mike Smith will ride Astrology and the last time he ran his best Beyer ever at 93. Smith is a quality rider who had a bad outing in the Derby so expect him to bring in the Preakness.

Reason #3 Racing Style

Astrology is coming out of the post #1 which I love considering his running style. He is a presser and should be right up with the leaders. When the leaders stumble he will have the shortest way to go and the best chance to hold off the closers.

Reason #4 Improving Horse

Astrology’s last 2 races this year have improved on the previous race. He ran a 87 Beyer in March and then ran his best race ever in the slop with a 93. This horse has never finished worst than 3rd. Expect improvement in the Preakness.

Reason #5 Fresh Horse

With only 2 races this year Astrology is coming into the Preakness fresh and hungry. Racing in the Triple Crown takes its toll on horses that is why it is so hard to win all three, so why not look for a horse that is not wore down. With little racing this year he is bound to show his 3 year old improvement. Not only that but at 15-1 he is a steal.

So there you have it, five reasons to go with a 15-1 horse and cash a large ticket.

Don’t be afraid to post your picks in the forum and good luck on Preakness day.

Horse Racing Office Pool Idea – Survivor

Office Pools for horse racing are easy for the big races such as the Kentucky Derby  or Preakness Stakes, but if you are a true horse racing fan those days come just 3 times a year. Instead you may lean towards putting on monthly horse racing office pools or even weekend pools. That is where a horse racing survivor pool comes in. You can participate in this pool anytime there is horse racing…which if you have ever seen TVG you know is everyday.

Here is how I would create a: HORSE RACING SURVIVOR pool

Objective: To pick one horse to win, place or show (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) each day or race and be the last participant standing.

Group Size: Any

1) Pick a track..your local track or one that is shown on TVG will do.

2) Each participant will pick one horse each race.

  • Participants can only pick the favorite once.

2) Participant’s horse must finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd to advance to the next race.

Scoring:

  • If the participant horse finishes 1st, 2nd or 3rd, they survive and advance to the next race.
  • If the horse does not finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd the participant gets a STRIKE or they could be eliminated.
  • 2 strikes and the participant is out of the pool.

Optional: you could increase the number of strikes and continue into the following day’s races.

Payout:

  • Last participant standing wins the pot.

PROs:

  • Simple to create
  • Does not involve a big time commitment
  • Daily
  • Flexible and fun for the day

CONs:

  • Participants may be knocked out early
  • Difficult to payout to multiple places
  • May end in a tie

Belmont Stakes Past Performances And Picks For Your Office Pool

If you plan to participate in a Belmont Stakes office pool (I suggest a Blind Draw, Basic Draft or a First and Last pool), then you don’t want to miss out on FREE past performances. It is always a good idea to have as many resources available to you as possible and the Daily Form provides just that. If you are an expert handicapper then use the Classic Form or the Formulator form but if you are a novice handicapper the Easy Form works great.

I also would take a look at my Belmont picks and use them as another office pool resource.  I successfully predicted a win by Luckin’ at Lucky, a poor outing by Super Saver and a bad finish by Aikenite to win my First and Last pool for the Preakness. So go with the hot hand: The Office Pool Guy’s picks.

How To Create A Simple Belmont Stakes Office Pool

The Belmont Stakes has lost a little luster as there will not be a Triple Crown winner, but that shouldn’t stop us from having some fun with a Belmont office pool. For the Preakness, I suggested a FIRST AND LAST pool which is a great pool for a field with a couple of lower odd favorites. The Belmont on the other hand should be wide open, therefore let’s just put together a very simple and fun pool called a BLIND DRAW pool (a First and Last would also work well, its up to you).

Here is how I would create a BLIND DRAW pool:

Objective: To hold the Belmont Stakes winner

Group Size: Up to 12

1) Put the names of all the horses in a hat

2) Each participant pulls out one name out of the hat (more if less than 12 participants…you can auction off the additional horses)

3) Participant with the winning horse wins the pot.

  • Optional: Can payout for 2nd and 3rd place also
  • Funny Optional idea: as each player draws a horse out of the hat, they don’t look at it. When all horses have been drawn, everyone puts the paper up to their head and goes around the room trading horses for a 2 minutes. Once the 2 minutes is up, the horse you are left with is the one you get.

If the BLIND DRAW and the FIRST and LAST pools are too simple or just don’t touch your fancy, then try the following Belmont office pool:

Sportsco.com

If you are looking for the BELMONT STAKES winner go to “My Picks” page (I successfully picked the Preakness winner so I will give it a shot with the Belmont).

Preakness Stakes Predictions To Help You Win The First And Last Pool

After my poor showing in the Kentucky Derby, I need to make up for it with some outstanding advice on the Preakness Stakes this weekend. My first piece of advice would be to put together a First and Last pool, especially if you did as poorly as I did in the Derby (I had Awesome Act in the Derby and he finished 19th which would have won my First and Last pool idea).

Other than that here are my BOLD predictions for the Preakness Stakes:

1) SUPER SAVER will NOT win the Preakness Stakes

  • Calvin Borel has made a living out at Churchill Downs winning 3 of the last 4 Derbies there…well guess what the Preakness is not held at Churchill. So Borel will have to adjust to the different track and won’t have the home track advantage.
  • The Track will not be wet and muddy. Many horses struggle in the slop (that is why there are so many scratches on other days when it is wet). Therefore, many horses that didn’t perform up to par in the slop will do much better at the Preakness.
  • Borel won’t be allowed to get the rail. The other jockeys and owners have to know by now that Borel MUST have the rail to win…so they will not let him have it in the Preakness.
  • Super Saver did not run that fast in the Derby…he just didn’t run as slowly as the others in the mud. I am convinced there are many faster horses.

2) LOOKIN AT LUCKY will WIN the Preakness Stakes

  • He is the best horse when the track is fast. If you throw out the races where he got in trouble and races in the mud, you will see that Lucky is the best horse. There is a reason he was the Morning Line favorite before the rains changed things.
  • He won’t get in any trouble in the Preakness, especially from the 7 post. Some say he is trouble bound, I say he has used up all his bad luck.
  • He has seen Super Saver’s best effort ever (his last race) and still finished with 94 Beyer.

3) AIKENITE will finish LAST

  • He is in the one hole and is a closer so that will put him way back right from the start.
  • His best race was his last race so expect a big drop off Saturday.
  • Gomez is off as the jockey so expect a slow “get to know you” race.
  • He hasn’t won since 2009 and that was a sprint.

Just like for the Kentucky Derby, the Daily Racing Form prints and gives out FREE past performances for the Preakness Stakes.

Note: Two of the 14 horses scratched for Saturday, so there will be only 12 entrants. Make sure to plan your office pool accordingly.
