The Office Pool Guy is determined to find the 150 best office pool players in the nation and then award National Office Pool Player of the Year Honors to the two that survive.
The idea all started as I was watching an Charl Schwartzel, a relatively unknown golfer, defeat another virtually unknown golfer on his way to winning one of the most prestigous awards in all of sports: The Green Jacket.
My first thought was good for him but then it dawned on me, is he really the best golfer? Is he really that good? I then remembered that one tournament does not determine the best golfer in the world. That honor goes to the golfer who consistently, event after event, proves he IS the best golfer. The PGA therefore has a world ranking.
So why not apply the same idea to office pools? How many times have you seen your office pool won by someone who finishes last in the next office pool or who only does well in one office pool sport?
To truly be called the best office pool player, a player must demonstrate greatness over the course of many office pools, using multiple formats and multiple sports. That person deserves a title…NATIONAL OFFICE POOL PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
So I am looking for 150 serious office pool players who want to prove they are the best over the course of multiple events. They will be a part of the OFFICE POOL CHAMPIONS TOUR (OPCT).

Just came across some free office pool spreadsheets which you can use to host and score your office pool automatically. The spreadsheets come in both an Excel and Mac (numbers) format. Many different sports and many different spreadsheet for download.
Wow, March Madness 2011 just finished and I am so disappointed. The March Madness office pools this year were a disaster. Not one person in any of the office pools I was in had any of the Final Four teams. Not only that but the office pool was officially over before this past weekend even started. This is the first year that I had no interest in the Final Four and did not look forward to the championship game. We usually will have a Final Four party with office pool squares and office pool predictions but not this year. March Madness 2011 will forever go down as the worst for the Office Pool Guy.

What is SBR?
It is one most addictive and comprehensive sports sites I have ever seen.
Here are my top 10 reasons why you should join and add it to your office pool toolbox:
1) It is Free
My first rule when looking for office pool sites is to find free QUALITY information. A lot of free stuff is free for a reason therefore you need to find sites that offer quality content. SBR does just that. You get forums, contests, prizes, picks and much more all for just signing up.
2) SBR Forum
The SBR forum is a very active discussion forum with almost a thousand members. It has every topic imaginable from the NFL to NASCAR, so you should find something of interest. You can read the posts or post yourself at all hours of the day.
3) Office Pools and Contests
This is my favorite part of the site. Everyday you can find contests to play for free. They offer some very unique office pool ideas. You can join an office pool league or tourney or really test your skills as “The Man” and take on all other members. They also have daily, weekly and season long office pool contests. You can play in a NFL Survivor pool contest one day and a College Football Pickem contest the next. Most contests award SBR points which can be used to purchase cash prizes.
4) SBR Points and Cash Prizes
The site is free to join but offers many rewards. In particular is the use of SBR points. These points make coming to the site worthwhile because they can be exchanged for real prizes such as clothing, books, food and what I play for…electronics (tv, X-Box, Computers etc). It is easy to earn SBR points because they are given for winning contests, posting in the forum, and just plain logging into the site.
5) Picks and Selections
Another great feature comes from the members themselves. Members post advice and selection on each and every game that is played. They tell you which teams are going to win and which to watch out for. The members normally post their records so you know which ones to follow and which members to avoid. It really helps me in my office pools because it helps to confirm my selections.
This forum area gives trend and stats to help you with your handicapping of the games. I am a big fan of using trends especially in my NFL office pools. If you want to know which teams play well in week 1 or which teams are good at home then this area is for you.
If you don’t like the member picks then you can go to this area and pick up selections from some of the best handicapper around. It also helps to keep an eye on who is hot and who is not so that if need that last minute Survivor winner you know who to follow.
If you want to know the odds of a certain game then just go to the “SBR Live Odds Area”. From here you can find out the point spreads offered by ten of the most popular sports books. You can watch line moves easily and find where the money is going. This section also has links to weather, injury and statistical information for all the games.
9) Picks Spreadsheet
The site also provides members with a spreadsheet that will easily track your picks and selections. This helps so that you know what types of picks are winning and which are losing. This can be valuable in making sure your not picking too many favorites or home teams.
10) Information, Tips and Other Bonuses
This site is chalk full of handicapping information and tips. Granted it is tailored to those making real money bets, but I do think their is tons of valuable ideas here. If you are interested in placing real money bets this site can help you get in and get an edge.

Wunderdog Sports Picks has an interesting article that we can apply to our NFL office pools. It discusses some reasons to pick the underdog. This fits really well with my “Contrarian Theory” of office pools that I discuss in my NFL Strategy Guide. I think that you have to be able to pick the winning underdog regularly to be successful at office pools. The exception is in Survivor pools where one mistake can eliminate you but in most standard Pick’em pool or Confidence pools you have to find that undervalued underdog.
Lets take a look at what they say are the reasons why we need to pick the underdog:
1) NFL parity
This is a big factor why you must be able to pick underdogs. The NFL is filled with parity as teams that win many games one year will come back and win far less the next. Underdogs win all the time and you need to be aware of the trends that point to a winning underdog.
2) A Win Is A Win
Most games are played within 2 touchdowns, which means most games are close. Teams rarely get blown out as coaches will rest starters and avoid injury late in a game.
3) No Respect
The underdog gets little respect from the public and this makes them mad. You have to remember these are some of the most competitive people in the world and most are use to winning and succeeding so they will battle tooth and nail.
4) The Public
The public loves to bet the favorite and the “sexy team”. This pushes the line higher than it should and the value comes in on the underdog.
5) Courage
Most people do not like picking underdogs and don’t know how. That is why I show you how to do it in my NFL Strategy Guide, it pays off. Don’t be afraid of the dog and use historical trends to pick your spots.
6) The Point Spread
The point spread only matters in 16% of the games. So the winner will win outright most of the time. Therefore pick games based on who is going to win not who is favored. Most people don’t know this and therefore miss many great opportunities.
I agree with all of the points made by this article in fact I discuss these reasons in more detail in my book. If you want to succeed in your office pool you have to take the risk and pick some underdogs each week. You will be surprised how well you will do.
